Kathy Ledbetter of KG Ledbetter Photography has recently joined our blog group and we are so glad to have her with us.  This is a perfect time to get together with Kathy and learn a bit more about her.

Tell us a bit about yourself? and Are you a hobbyist or a pro?

I am Kathy Ledbetter of KG Ledbetter Photography.  I am married to very talented ceramic artist and my best friend.  We have two kids, Halley, who is 6 and Elliott who is almost 3 and a kitty named Pyra.  My husband and I met in college getting our ceramic degrees.  My passion for ceramics soon transformed into a passion for photography.  The common thread is the desire to create, a desire that has grown stronger over time.  And, my creative focus has shifted from making ceramic art to capturing images.

1. She is so sweet to her little “Bro Bro” 99% of the time. Caught a glimpse of the other 1% as she stole a ride on his much loved Radio Flyer Rocket. As you can see he parked himself in front and held on to the handle bars with every ounce of strength he had. As he screeched she glanced up at me with a bit of a smirk and probably thinking…’Mom, you watching this’? Gotta love em! This photograph holds a special place in my heart as it marks a turning point in the way that I capture my kids in their everyday. As well pushing my black and white edits closer to what I am aiming for.

What will we find in your camera bag?

What do you have in your camera bag and what is your favorite lens?

I have an original 7d and it was my very first DSLR purchase.  I am hoping to upgrade to a full frame body soon.  I shoot with a Canon 24-70 at photography sessions, and when I take my kids out and want zooming capabilities.  It is super heavy, though, and using it for everyday shooting became cumbersome.  So, I got a Canon 35mm.  I use it mostly for photos around the house and if we go on an adventure anywhere that I don’t want to lug around the heavy 24-70.  I also love using my 100mm 2.8L for macro shots.  With that being said, I have started to use my 50mm 1.8 the most because it’s great for freelensing. Because I freelens so much, it is the one lens that I could definitely not live without!  And last but not least, I just added a vintage Helios 44-2 to my collection!

3. I find my little girl often escaping the crazies of everyday life in quiet places being creative. One her favorite things to do is to make herself into a kitty using face paint. If she is in the bathroom for a long time I can usually assume she will come out as a kitty or other animal. This is her as a lion kitty. Freelensed.

Who inspires you?

There are so many photographers whom I am influenced by it would be impossible to list just a few.  In the past year I have become friends with many photographers online and they have not only influenced and inspired me but have also shown me guidance, encouragement and support.

And together they touched the sky. ~Christopher Robin. This image is one of my recent favorites. I love the light, patterns, textures, bokeh, and most of all it shows my two getting along having fun! Freelensed.

What inspired you to pick up your camera initially.

It all started with the desire to capture our kids growing up and being able to look back some day at decent photographs by which to remember them.  It soon became much more.  The memories I have captured portray the happiness and zest for life my children exude. Through these glimpses in time, a beautiful everyday life story of family love and joy evolves, one that can be embraced forever through images!

Moments will sometimes pass you by without taking the time to notice the beauty in them. These little mushrooms popped up in the morning and were gone by noon wilted by the heat of sun. Glad I captured them when I did as they were soon gone. Freelensed beauty! This image is one that marks an interest in getting up close and capturing those details that often go unnoticed. My interest in Macro photography was born. My next lens purchase was the 100mm Macro.

Photoshop or Lightroom? and why that choice?

I use both Lightroom and Photoshop.  In the beginning, I used Photoshop for all editing, even small adjustments.  Editing images in Photoshop took too much time, and I fell way behind keeping up with my personal photographs.  I decided to take the plunge and learn how to use Lightroom.  And, oh my, it has changed my workflow enormously!  Now, I edit much more in Lightroom than in Photoshop, especially for everyday shots.

“Both light and shadow are the dance of Love.” ~Rumi. My daughter is dancing with a piece of Tulle. I love to capture the movement and energy she exudes when she dances. Freelensed

If you had to choose one area of specialization what would that be and why?

I would say somewhere between lifestyle and fine art photography however, I am a bit of a “jack of all trades” and love a variety of styles and techniques.  With that in mind, I love high contrast moody black and whites.  One of my favorite ways to shoot is to freelens.  The narrow depth of field, selective focus, light and bokeh achieved using this technique has me hooked for life!  I adore getting up close and capturing the details of our world that are normally passed by and go unnoticed.  And last but definitely not least, my absolute favorite thing to capture and the images that pull on my heart strings are those that show the story of our kids everyday and ordinary lives.

My daughter and I had so much fun going out and capturing her dancing and doing gymnastics against the beautiful sunset sky! She is always so good at entertaining her picture taking Momma. We shot these for her 6th Birthday invitation. I took so many that I absolutely adore and now am having a hard time deciding which ones are my favorites! This one is at the top of the list.
