Lili Nis of Soul Chasing Photography shared the beautiful camera bokeh image and was selected by Tori Aspern of Roots and Twigs Photography as our overall winner for this theme.  I caught up with Lili to learn a little more about her photography journey.

  1. Tell us a bit about yourself?  and  Are you a hobbyist or a pro?

Hi and thank you for having me.  My name is Lili Nis. I am 38 years old and mother to three small children. I am originally from Indonesia but now live in Bremen, Germany.

I am a passionate hobbyist who loves to capture a real deep emotion.

This was the final image I took last year (December 30, 2016) with my Lensbaby Composer Pro and the Sweet 35 optic.  This was the conclusion of my photography journey last year.  Through this image I can see how far I have come and how much I have evolved.  I am very happy with the results of this image and how it depicts “me” as a photographer

  1. Tell us a bit about your photography gear.  What is the lens do you not have but you desire to have the most?

I just upgraded my Camera from Canon 5Dmkii in to Canon 6D. I have the Sigma 50mm1.4Art , Sigma 35mm1.4 Art  as well as the Lensbaby Composer Pro with Sweet 35 , Edge 80 and Twist 60.

Since I love the creativity that Lensbaby offers, I am dreaming having the Velvet 56 for my Portrait Images.

The last couple of weeks I have tried some new angles for my portraits, and this is one of them.

  1. How did your journey to be a photographer happen?

Like most of Mothers with Cameras, at first I just want to take beautiful pictures of my kids. But with the time I wanted more than just a candid image. When a friend told me there was a local workshop on how to use a camera in manual mode, I just pushed  myself to attend it, and since then I have become addicted to Photography. Every night when my Baby is asleep and I’m waiting for my husband to come home from work, I sit in front of my laptop and jump from one photography community to another and read all the articles about Photography and let myself be inspired.

Normally I do not shoot couples.  I felt really nervous at the time.  This picture was taken in Autumn last year.  On that day I was blessed with so much beautiful light and I was able to play with lights and shadows.

  1. Who inspires you?

Oh my goodness, this is a really mean question lol, there are so much talented photographers that i admire.  Here are three that I really admire:

Anita Cline from My Three Sons Image, her free lensing and Lensbaby images are amazing!  She captures the emotions so perfectly, I don’t know any other artist who creates such a perfectly beautiful “blur” in her images.

Candice Zugich from The Blissful Maven. From the very first time i saw her photographs I fell in love. There is so much love and emotion in her images. I admire her post processing so much.

Holly Nicole from The Timekeeper. She is not just an amazing artist, but she is also a very lovely person who always supports another photographer around the Globe. I’m always in awe of how can she capture the daily life (of her children) and transform it in to something magical, something outstanding.

I took this image with the Lensbaby Composer Pro and the Sweet 35 optic.  I really love the blur and bokeh that this lens creates.  However, I di have some issues with this lens the first time I used it, but now I am really happy and enjoying using it.

  1. What advice would you share to the aspirants in this field?

Take it easy. Don’t push yourself so hard and don’t compare yourself with other photographers who have already been in business for a long time 🙂 I wish that someone had told me that.  You have to know the photography rules but you do not need to limit yourself to the rules.

My baby girl is the one who makes me that photographer I am today.  Because of her I can push myself to be creative, to learn, and to explore the world of photography

  1. One thing that you have learnt as a photographer over the years?

For me, photography is about emotion.  I want that people who look at my images to feel the emotion that I am trying to portray, not just a beautiful portrait.  They should see or feel, by looking at the image, the sadness, the anger, the loneliness , the happiness etc, I do not really care if my image is not perfect by photography rules as long as they make people feel something.

It was a cold winters day and we took a walk into town.  I hoped that I would be able to take some beautiful images.  After a while we were freexing and decided to get some coffee.  On our way we found this frozen tree.  It was so beautiful that we had to take some photos.  We enjoyed it so much that we forgot to get out coffee.  It was the best image I took that day.
