Jess of @walkingbetweenmountains was selected as our featured artist for the {New} theme and I took a bit of time to learn a bit more about her.

Tell us a bit about yourself?  And …  Are you a hobbyist or a pro?

I live outside of New Orleans, Louisiana with my husband and two tweenage daughters. We love to travel the country in our RV and do so at every given opportunity. I’m a total plant lady and I can usually be found with either a book, a pen, or a camera in my hands. I’ve been a professional photographer since 2011.

I chose this one because this kind of beautiful chaos is what I hope to capture for the families who hire me. My goal is to show people the beauty in their “messy” lives.

Tell us a bit about your photography gear. What lens do you not have but you desire to have the most?

Hmmm…I have way too many lenses but have recently gotten my first Lensbaby and can’t wait to try out the others. I have the Sol45 and I’m thinking about getting the Velvet 85 next.

I chose this one because it’s of my kids exploring on one of our many adventures.

Describe your style of work and how you found your style.

My style is constantly evolving and I hope it never stops. I started out as a wedding photographer and now my focus is documentary style family photography. Finding my style was a slow evolution of figuring out what type of images spoke to me both artistically and personally. My style of photography is about capturing life unscripted. It’s about connection, genuine emotion and authenticity. But mostly, as my business name suggests, it’s about learning to walk between the mountains. To appreciate the extraordinary everyday.

I chose this one because of the connection in the moment.

Are you a creative person, ….have you always been creative, ….what inspires your creativity?

I always tell people that I’m not so much a creative person as I am intuitive. I feel like my gift in photography lies in my ability to truly see people. To listen. And then to be able to document what is already there in a beautiful and artistic way. I feel that I am not so much the creator of my body of work but more of a narrator expressing his interpretation of a story. I’m constantly inspired by my children. I’ll always believe that they teach me more than I could ever teach them. I’m also inspired by the incredible every day moments in life and by the beauty found in the depths of human emotion.

I chose this one because of the fun color, scale, and negative space. And again, it’s my family on one of our adventures.

Who is your favorite photographer, living or dead?

I get asked this question a lot and I have no good answer. Same with my favorite movie or song. I can’t choose. I love and appreciate the arts and all of the different voices that contribute to them so much that I could hardly choose one as a favorite.

This will forever be one of my favorite client images. A totally organic moment and that little guy’s face is just so priceless!

What is your favorite quote?

No lie I have notebooks full of quotes that I adore. So again, it’s so difficult to choose a favorite, but I’ve always loved this one. “Even after all this time the Sun never says to the Earth, “You owe me.” Look what happens with a love like that, it lights the whole sky.” -Hafiz

I love the light in this one and the completely unprompted childhood moment.

Thank you Jess for sharing a little bit about who you are and your style of photography, we loved learning more about you. Don’t forget to check out her Instagram page at @walkingbetweenmountains.
