Karolina of @intothegreen8 was our featured artist for the {Story Telling} theme. Story Telling is such an art, and I wanted to learn more about Karolina and her photography journey.

I hope you enjoy her story as much as I have.

Tell us a bit about yourself? And, are you a hobbyist or a pro?

I was interested in photography since I remember. It was my dad’s big hobby and he’s naturally passed it to me, creating the memories of developing films together or wandering outdoors with me and my brother and talking about photography. I am trying to make it more than a hobby which isn’t easy with the current situation in the world.

Tell us a bit about your photography gear. What is the lens you do not have but you desire to have the most?

I use Canon 6d with prime Sigma lenses, 85 mm, 35 mm and I have recently purchased 105 mm. It was my big dream for a while so I am really satisfied with my gear for now.

Describe your style of work and how you found your style.

I think it’s an ongoing process, I am developing my style constantly. I am mostly shooting outdoors, always chasing the light and trying to capture emotions and connection either between subjects, subject and enviroment or my connection with people I photograph. I love candid unposed shots and during family sessions I tend to talk a lot and make people laugh.

Are you a creative person, ….. have you always been creative, ….what inspires your creativity?

I was always trying to express myself through art. Since I was little I was always sketching and drawing or simply making things. I can’t imagine my life without creating, it seems pretty natural to me. I am being inspired by nature, my kids, dreams and other artists.

Who is your favorite photographer, living or dead?

There are so many photographers whose work I admire that it would be unfair if I mention just one.

What is your favorite quote?

I don’t really have one favorite.

Thank you Karolina for sharing a little bit about who you are and your style of photography, we loved learning more about you. Don’t forget to check out her Instagram page @intothegreen8

We look forward to seeing your images on our Facebook page and our Instagram Page.  The theme this month is {Growth} for so tag us with #sharesix_growth.

Shona of @marlos_marvels was our featured artist for the {Books} theme. The is something magical about books, and so I connected with Shona to learn more about her and her photography journey.

Tell us a bit about yourself?  And, are you a hobbyist or a pro?

I’m both, I do work professionally but it’s very quiet just now in the UK being on full lockdown so very much just a hobbby at the moment!

Tell us a bit about your photography gear.  What is the lens do you not have but you   desire to have the most?

I use a canon 5d mkiv and my 50mm lens the most but I would really prefer a 35mm. Also on my list is a mirrorless camera (not sure which yet) and I would like to get an iPad for editing.

Describe your style of work and how you found your style.

I’m not sure I have a style but I’m working on it! I would say I mostly take portraits with a touch of magic! I like colour and brightness I’m not great at doing moody.

Are you a creative person, ….have you always been creative, ….what inspires your creativity?

Yes I would say I am, I have to be doing something creative. I’ve recently redecorated my house and designed and printed some art for the walls. I’m also working on another project just now but it’s a secret for now!

Who is your favorite photographer, living or dead?

So many of the photographers I’m inspired by are on Instagram. I don’t really have a favourite!

What is your favorite quote?

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn. -John Muir

{Story Telling} was chosen as the December 2020 theme by Ceri Herd Photography. Again there were so many images to choose from that Ceri had a really hard time selecting her choice for the featured image.

Congratulations to @intothegreen8 for your stunning image. Ceri had the following to say about your image:

“It was incredibly hard to choose a favourite image from this month’s submissionst. I ultimately chose this stunning capture because I love the pops of colour and the strength of the composition, the muddy boots and the anticipation of the next jump. It’s a beautifully captured and processed moment, telling a complete story in a seemingly simple way. That look of simplicity is deceptively hard to achieve but this photographer has done so skillfully”.

@intothegreen8

We had no images on our Facebook page for December. Photos from our Instagram page that we have chosen to highlight are below and in no particular order. Ashley of @ashley_mcbroom_photography was chosen as the featured artist for the {Colors20} theme. I connected with Ashley to learn more about her and her photography journey.

We had the most spectacular sunsets last fall during our trip to the Gulf. I had my underwater housing on my camera and got in with my son to capture the rich colors in the sky.

Tell us a bit about yourself?  And, are you a hobbyist or a pro?

I’m an Atlanta-area mom of three and my love for photography started the way it seems to for many others I’ve met – I wanted to capture all the fleeting moments when my first baby was born over 10 years ago. I’m a hobbyist turned pro, I opened up my business – Ashley McBroom Photography – just over 4 years ago and I photograph primarily families and children with a bit of commercial photography sprinkled in the mix. I still manage to find enough time outside of my client work to drive my children crazy by photographing them and directing them to go stand in the pretty light. In my free time, I love to cook, hike, and play games with my family.

This dancer was so incredibly graceful underwater. I loved the mystery of her expression looking towards her own reflection in the dark water.

Tell us a bit about your photography gear.  What is the lens do you not have but you   desire to have the most?

I just recently went mirrorless with the Canon r5 and I’m still figuring out everything it can do after using my 5dMiv for years. I updated my underwater housing – I use an SPL Waterhousing – and can’t wait to get back in the pool with it this spring when it’s warm enough! As for lenses, I love shooting with a 50mm lens and I also love my Canon 135 f/2, it’s pure magic and lightweight unlike most longer focal length lenses. If I could get any new lens without worrying about my budget, I’d probably get an even longer focal length like the 200mm f/2, but Canon hasn’t come out with the mirrorless version yet!

I’m a sucker for anything pink so I loved the layers of pink in the reflections and the amazing back bend this dancer held.

Describe your style of work and how you found your style.

My style of work is focused on connection between my subjects or connection between myself and my subjects, and I love shooting wide open for a dreamy feel. I love contrast and color in my work, especially in my underwater work! I think I found my style by studying the work of other photographers I liked and spending a lot of time “playing” with editing.

This senior was shy to open up for the camera during our session but we ended our evening together at a sunflower field and she relaxed and let loose. I loved the colors of the golden sunset and flowers mixed with the movement in her hair.

Are you a creative person, ….have you always been creative, ….what inspires your creativity?

I’ve always had a strong need to create. As a child, I loved all kinds of crafts and I’ve always loved the feeling of making something myself from start to finish and learning something new. I think it came from my mom’s guidance; even though she herself would never claim to be artistic, she has a can-do attitude and has always say things like “You could make that yourself!” or “You could do that” when it came to any idea I had about something I wanted to create. As a photographer, light inspires me more than anything else. I love shooting with backlight and when I see light starting to pick up in my one of my children’s hair if we’re playing outside, I rush to get my camera.

This is one of my very favorite personal shots of my daughter. She adores her oversized llama and l set her in front of the pretty window light and let the moment unfold.

Who is your favorite photographer, living or dead?

I really admire Diane Arbus’s work – the intensity and power of it and the way the quirkiness of the photos she took almost shocks you into looking deeper. Currently I’m obsessed by the dreaminess and depth of Anna Aromin’s work. Every single image she shares is rich with magic!

This family was a joy to photograph, not minding wading into the water in their beautiful clothes and I loved their happy, splashing energy. I can feel their laughter when I look back at this image.

What is your favorite quote?

Oh this one is so hard! One of my favorites is by a famous photographer, Don McCullin: “Photography for me is not looking, it’s feeling. If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures.”

Thank you Ashley for sharing a little bit about who you are and your style of photography, we loved learning more about you. Don’t forget to check out her Instagram page @ashley_mcbroom_photography

Congratulations to @kellyvia for her fun {Traditions} image. Katherine had the following to say about your image:

“I keep coming back to this one. It somehow reminds me of my family, and it feels real and genuine- not curated or posed like so many other photos. Just looking at their cool whip filled smiles I can hear their giggles.”

Sharleen Stuart Photography chose the theme {Books}. We have all gone through phases of lockdown and {Books} has been a popular past time for her. In fact, as she tells, she reads every day. Sadly, this theme was not very well tagged. There was a whole bunch of book images in the November and December theme, but sadly we could not pull from those images.

Congratulations to @marlos_marvels for being chosen as the guest feature for the theme {Books}, Sharleen had the following to say about this image:

“This image reminds me of me, when I was young. I could read all day, any place, any time. I recall my bedroom being full of books. While I did not read on my back, you would often find me on my stomach engrossed in my books. I love everything about this image”.

I am not sure where 2020 went. I struggled to keep up with the year and the blogs, so my apologies. In order to catch up, I will be sharing the highlights every 2 weeks so that we get back on track .

September’s theme was {Colors} and Lynne Grant Photography chose the featured artist for the theme. Congratulations @ashley_mcbroom_photography. Your image was breath taking. This is what Lynne had to say about your image:

“Having missed out on our summer holiday abroad this year, this gorgeous image brought back memories of warm evenings at the beach watching the sun set. This sunset is glorious.”

Happy New Year to all the Share Six followers. I hope that this will be a great year for you, and that we get to see more of your postings on Facebook, and Instagram.

Tiffanie of @tlovesr was chosen as the featured artist for the {Refresh} theme. I connected with Tiffany to learn more about her and her photography journey.

Tell us a bit about yourself?  and  Are you a hobbyist or a pro?

I own my photography business and do it full time. I mostly shoot children, families and couples. I typically take on a handful of weddings each year, too. My degree is actually in journalist + videography (Radio/TV — I was a reporter and anchor before we had children), but I learned photography in high school on film and in a dark room.

Tell us a bit about your photography gear.  What is the lens do you not have but you   desire to have the most?

I’m a gear junkie and have way more than one absolutely needs. But, I like options and trying new things. I shoot Nikon. I primarily shoot with my D850 and Z6, but also have a D750 and am impatiently waiting for my Z7ii to arrive. I really love the mirrorless system and have slowly been switching over to native lenses for the Z series. I use a lot of Lensbaby lenses with my work and the one lens I am dying for is the Lensbaby Velvet 85.

What makes them pick up the camera when they don’t feel like it?

When I am feeling uninspired and I don’t feel like grabbing my camera, I try to remember I’ll be glad I did when I look back. Even if I don’t edit the photos for six months or a year, I will still have those moments and the story is important.

Film or digital? Black and white or color? Lifestyle or traditional?

I shot film and processed it in the dark room as a teen and in my early 20’s. I much prefer the ease of digital imagery ha! I love a good black and white photo, but I stick to color 90 percent of the time. I shoot for color and use color theory in just about every image. There’s something to be said for a traditional portrait, but capturing connection and emotion speaks to my heart. I want my storytelling through imagery to take my subjects back to what they felt in that moment. I want the viewer to feel those emotions my subjects felt and experience the story.

What personal projects are you working?

I am currently in the middle of a 30 day project of using one of my Lensbaby lenses every single day. With my busy client season wrapping up, I do need to start a new personal project or series documenting my kids. Those are always my favorite projects. Last year I completed my Seasons of the Climbing Tree series with my kids and it is hands down my most favorite work I’ve produced.

Most important thing you’ve learned about editing?

Oh gosh. That’s a broad question because editing can be so complex ha! I would have to say learning about split toning and color grading is the most important editing tool I’ve learned. It really has changed the way I edit and helped me get the tones and polish off my images. I love color theory and these tools help me bring that into each and every photo I edit.

Thank you Tiffanie for sharing a little bit about who you are and your style of photography, we loved learning more about you. Don’t forget to check out her Instagram page @tlovesr

And just like that, it is December. I am not sure if this year has gone fast or slow. In many ways it feels like time has flown. I know that for all of us it has been a real struggle to get out and take some photographs for the themes. In some countries our team has been under strict lock down. It makes it much harder when we have a theme to blog. Getting ourselves motivated and structured to pick up the camera has been a challenge. I know that if I was not blogging, I probably would not have picked it up at all. Work responsibilities have had to come first for many of us as well.

I am not sure how you are doing, but I hope that we at least encourage you to get out and take your camera for a walk. Staying safe and well is all our priorities and we wish that for you as well.

December is the festive time of the year. The Christmas trees are going up in some homes, the lights are on, the world turns glittery and Ceri Herd Photography has challenged us to capture the many opportunities to do some {Story Telling}. We hope, that despite the challenges that face us, that you and your family have the opportunity to embrace each other and enjoy the beauty of the season.

As we wind down this year, we take the opportunity to thank you for joining us for yet another year of challenges, fun and the opportunity to learn from each other. Can you believe it, we have been doing this for 5 years and I am so grateful to all the blog team for hanging in there each month and being a part of this awesome group. I am also grateful that you join us by tagging us for each theme.

We wish you a peaceful, healthy, safe December. While our celebrations may be smaller than normal, embrace those moments with your family, for this too shall pass, and life will once again be crazy hectic.

We look forward to seeing your images on our Facebook page and our Instagram Page.  Don’t forget to tag the Instagram posts with #sharesix_storytelling.  Each month we feature one artist on our Facebook and Webpage banner.  We will also do an interview with the featured artist, so share your images to be a part of this opportunity.

Jess of @walkingbetweenmountains was selected as our featured artist for the {New} theme and I took a bit of time to learn a bit more about her.

Tell us a bit about yourself?  And …  Are you a hobbyist or a pro?

I live outside of New Orleans, Louisiana with my husband and two tweenage daughters. We love to travel the country in our RV and do so at every given opportunity. I’m a total plant lady and I can usually be found with either a book, a pen, or a camera in my hands. I’ve been a professional photographer since 2011.

I chose this one because this kind of beautiful chaos is what I hope to capture for the families who hire me. My goal is to show people the beauty in their “messy” lives.

Tell us a bit about your photography gear. What lens do you not have but you desire to have the most?

Hmmm…I have way too many lenses but have recently gotten my first Lensbaby and can’t wait to try out the others. I have the Sol45 and I’m thinking about getting the Velvet 85 next.

I chose this one because it’s of my kids exploring on one of our many adventures.

Describe your style of work and how you found your style.

My style is constantly evolving and I hope it never stops. I started out as a wedding photographer and now my focus is documentary style family photography. Finding my style was a slow evolution of figuring out what type of images spoke to me both artistically and personally. My style of photography is about capturing life unscripted. It’s about connection, genuine emotion and authenticity. But mostly, as my business name suggests, it’s about learning to walk between the mountains. To appreciate the extraordinary everyday.

I chose this one because of the connection in the moment.

Are you a creative person, ….have you always been creative, ….what inspires your creativity?

I always tell people that I’m not so much a creative person as I am intuitive. I feel like my gift in photography lies in my ability to truly see people. To listen. And then to be able to document what is already there in a beautiful and artistic way. I feel that I am not so much the creator of my body of work but more of a narrator expressing his interpretation of a story. I’m constantly inspired by my children. I’ll always believe that they teach me more than I could ever teach them. I’m also inspired by the incredible every day moments in life and by the beauty found in the depths of human emotion.

I chose this one because of the fun color, scale, and negative space. And again, it’s my family on one of our adventures.

Who is your favorite photographer, living or dead?

I get asked this question a lot and I have no good answer. Same with my favorite movie or song. I can’t choose. I love and appreciate the arts and all of the different voices that contribute to them so much that I could hardly choose one as a favorite.

This will forever be one of my favorite client images. A totally organic moment and that little guy’s face is just so priceless!

What is your favorite quote?

No lie I have notebooks full of quotes that I adore. So again, it’s so difficult to choose a favorite, but I’ve always loved this one. “Even after all this time the Sun never says to the Earth, “You owe me.” Look what happens with a love like that, it lights the whole sky.” -Hafiz

I love the light in this one and the completely unprompted childhood moment.

Thank you Jess for sharing a little bit about who you are and your style of photography, we loved learning more about you. Don’t forget to check out her Instagram page at @walkingbetweenmountains.

We look forward to seeing your images on our Facebook page and our Instagram Page.  The theme this month is {Traditions} and we still have a few more days so tag us with #sharesix_traditions.
