There seems to be so much going on right now with all of our contributors. Bear with us as we navigate our lives and blogging.
This month Katherine of Cobert Photography chose the theme {Joy}. Katherine and her family have been going through a really tough time and I fully get why she would chose the theme {Joy}.
The definition of {Joy} is “A great feeling of great pleasure and happiness”
We are quieter than normal but I look forward to seeing how each person interprets the theme {Joy}.
These photo’s draw me in and make me want to see more. I hope you do too.

The theme {Documentary} was chosen by Sharleen Stuart Photography and it gave us a wide open field to submit on. So much of our lives is part of a series of time that is documented. Sharleen chose @jomartindale as the featured artist for this theme for the following reason:
“This image brings back memories of my childhood. It drove my mother to distraction that I would walk through all the puddles on my way home from school, and arrive with soggy leather shoes, which then had to dry overnight. This image is beautiful and the action captured in here is stunning. The water splash is perfect and this just tells me that there was a whole lot of fun happening while taking this image. Congratulations – this is heart warming”

The theme was {Quote} and there were so many different options. This was one of our quieter months. However this image by @cdannhousenbrun really stood out to me.
“There is so much going on in this image, the rule of thirds, negative space, leading lines, and reflections, that my mind kept going in different directions. Congratulations on this stunning image. ”

Sharleen Stuart Photographychose the theme {Negative Space}. Truthfully it feels like we have been living in a negative space for the past year and a few months. Covid has really changed the way we have seen things, our ability to get out and do things and has just been restricting all the way around. Lets full up our posts with positive {Negative Space}.
Wikipedia says the following: “Negative space, in art, is the space around and between the subject of an image. Negative space may be most evident when the space around a subject, not the subject itself, forms an interesting or artistically relevant shape, and such space occasionally is used to artistic effect as the “real” subject of an image.“
This month is going to be unusually quiet for the blog contributors. One of us is traveling, one is finishing up the school year, one is getting over health issues and the other is having camera issues. It has been a challenging year for all of us as photographers, especially those restricted to being at home. Picking up a camera lately has been difficult and the inspiration is lacking.
However, we do have some blog contributors who have been able to get out and take images for the theme so take some time to see what has been shared. Then come back and blast the our Facebook and Instagram pages with beautiful {Negative Space} images.

Ashley of @ashley_mcbroom_photography was chosen as the featured artist for the {Colors20} theme. I connected with Ashley to learn more about her and her photography journey.
We had the most spectacular sunsets last fall during our trip to the Gulf. I had my underwater housing on my camera and got in with my son to capture the rich colors in the sky.
Tell us a bit about yourself? And, are you a hobbyist or a pro?
I’m an Atlanta-area mom of three and my love for photography started the way it seems to for many others I’ve met – I wanted to capture all the fleeting moments when my first baby was born over 10 years ago. I’m a hobbyist turned pro, I opened up my business – Ashley McBroom Photography – just over 4 years ago and I photograph primarily families and children with a bit of commercial photography sprinkled in the mix. I still manage to find enough time outside of my client work to drive my children crazy by photographing them and directing them to go stand in the pretty light. In my free time, I love to cook, hike, and play games with my family.
This dancer was so incredibly graceful underwater. I loved the mystery of her expression looking towards her own reflection in the dark water.
Tell us a bit about your photography gear. What is the lens do you not have but you desire to have the most?
I just recently went mirrorless with the Canon r5 and I’m still figuring out everything it can do after using my 5dMiv for years. I updated my underwater housing – I use an SPL Waterhousing – and can’t wait to get back in the pool with it this spring when it’s warm enough! As for lenses, I love shooting with a 50mm lens and I also love my Canon 135 f/2, it’s pure magic and lightweight unlike most longer focal length lenses. If I could get any new lens without worrying about my budget, I’d probably get an even longer focal length like the 200mm f/2, but Canon hasn’t come out with the mirrorless version yet!
I’m a sucker for anything pink so I loved the layers of pink in the reflections and the amazing back bend this dancer held.
Describe your style of work and how you found your style.
My style of work is focused on connection between my subjects or connection between myself and my subjects, and I love shooting wide open for a dreamy feel. I love contrast and color in my work, especially in my underwater work! I think I found my style by studying the work of other photographers I liked and spending a lot of time “playing” with editing.
This senior was shy to open up for the camera during our session but we ended our evening together at a sunflower field and she relaxed and let loose. I loved the colors of the golden sunset and flowers mixed with the movement in her hair.
Are you a creative person, ….have you always been creative, ….what inspires your creativity?
I’ve always had a strong need to create. As a child, I loved all kinds of crafts and I’ve always loved the feeling of making something myself from start to finish and learning something new. I think it came from my mom’s guidance; even though she herself would never claim to be artistic, she has a can-do attitude and has always say things like “You could make that yourself!” or “You could do that” when it came to any idea I had about something I wanted to create. As a photographer, light inspires me more than anything else. I love shooting with backlight and when I see light starting to pick up in my one of my children’s hair if we’re playing outside, I rush to get my camera.
This is one of my very favorite personal shots of my daughter. She adores her oversized llama and l set her in front of the pretty window light and let the moment unfold.
Who is your favorite photographer, living or dead?
I really admire Diane Arbus’s work – the intensity and power of it and the way the quirkiness of the photos she took almost shocks you into looking deeper. Currently I’m obsessed by the dreaminess and depth of Anna Aromin’s work. Every single image she shares is rich with magic!
This family was a joy to photograph, not minding wading into the water in their beautiful clothes and I loved their happy, splashing energy. I can feel their laughter when I look back at this image.
What is your favorite quote?
Oh this one is so hard! One of my favorites is by a famous photographer, Don McCullin: “Photography for me is not looking, it’s feeling. If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures.”
Thank you Ashley for sharing a little bit about who you are and your style of photography, we loved learning more about you. Don’t forget to check out her Instagram page @ashley_mcbroom_photography
We look forward to seeing your images on our Facebook page and our Instagram Page. The theme this month is {Story Telling} for the next two days so tag us with #sharesix_silverlining.
The theme is {Refresh} and I think after 6 month of Covid we all are probably feeling that we need some kind of refreshment
Congratulations @tlovesr for sharing this refreshing image. Elizabeth of It’s Still Life Photography by Elizabeth Wilson chose it for the following reasons:
The word “refresh” connotates a revitalization, a return of energy. This image is a true sip to the soul. The combination of movement of water with the light and rich bokeh creates a feeling of active refreshment.
